About the artist
Jamahl Cunningham’s journey into the elite tier of tattooing is defined by a unique fusion of military discipline and raw artistic passion. After serving his country as a flight combat medic in the Air Force, Jamahl chose to pursue his lifelong love for visual expression, undertaking a rigorous formal apprenticeship in Lacey, New Jersey. Now, with a decade of professional tattooing experience under his belt, Jamahl has seamlessly translated the precision and grace-under-pressure of his military background into a high-level tattoo career. Combining his disciplined training with the creative instincts he developed growing up in the vibrant cultural landscape of New York City, he brings a powerful, commanding skill set to the team at Club Tattoo New Jersey.
Specializing in large-scale Black & Grey Illustrative Realism, custom lettering, and intricate floral work, Jamahl treats the skin with a master craftsman's eye. His artistic philosophy is deeply anchored in structure, contrast, and readability, ensuring that every piece is engineered for maximum visual longevity. Heavily inspired by the dramatic, high-contrast chiaroscuro techniques of Caravaggio, as well as the timeless grandeur of Renaissance and Baroque art, Jamahl is particularly renowned for translating stone statues and religious portraiture into smooth, striking skin art. A major turning point in his career—a highly detailed lion piece executed on his own son’s forearm—solidified his mastery of heavy shadows and radiant light, a style heavily influenced by modern icons like Alex Sorsa and Greg Simkins.
When he isn’t at the studio pushing the boundaries of tonal depth, Jamahl remains completely immersed in the creative spectrum through oil painting, drawing, and hosting his own podcast. While clients easily recognize the meticulous realism in his portfolio, few would guess his underground roots as an avid graffiti writer—a background that infuses his custom lettering with an unmatched sense of rhythm and flow. From the unforgettable milestone of meeting industry legend Nikko Hurtado to crafting monumental, custom sleeves and backpieces, Jamahl treats every chair session as a high-level collaboration. At Club Tattoo NJ, he continues to elevate the standards of modern realism, ensuring every client walks away with a powerful, permanent masterpiece built to stand the test of time.
