How to Clean a New Tattoo & More Aftercare Tips

Your new tattoo may be a masterpiece, but it needs a little TLC to stay that way. Proper care is crucial to keeping your ink looking as good as it did when you walked out of the shop. And at Club Tattoo, we’re here to make sure you have all the guidance you need. Follow our expert tips and aftercare advice to keep your tattoo sharp and vibrant.

How do I clean my new tattoo?

First, remove the covering from your fresh tattoo at the time recommended by your tattoo artist. Wash the tattoo with lukewarm water and antibacterial soap, gently using your fingers to massage in a circular motion, and then pat the area dry with a paper towel. Even when the tattoo begins scabbing, continue cleaning it with lukewarm water and soap. Avoid picking at the scabs or pulling at peeling skin, as this can remove ink and lead to a splotchy tattoo.

What is the best way to manage itchiness?

Healing tattoos can itch like crazy, but it’s important to avoid scratching, as this can lead to infections, scarring, and a damaged tattoo. To alleviate itchiness, regularly apply a thin layer of fragrance-free moisturizer to keep the skin hydrated. Lightly tapping the area with your fingertips can also help relieve itching without disturbing the healing process.

Can I apply ointments or creams to speed up the healing process?

While it might be tempting to use creams that promise fast healing, it’s best to stick with a simple, fragrance-free moisturizer recommended by your tattoo artist. Some ointments, especially petroleum-based ones, can block pores and trap bacteria, potentially leading to infections. Use products specifically made for tattoos to provide moisture without blocking your skin.

How do I know if my tattoo is healing properly?

Signs of normal healing include slight redness, mild swelling, and a bit of cloudiness or blurring of the tattoo. If you notice these symptoms improving over time, it’s likely that your tattoo is healing well. However, if you experience severe redness, intense pain, or notice a greenish or yellowish discharge, it may be a sign of infection. Contact your tattoo artist immediately if you see these symptoms.

Is it okay to cover my tattoo with a bandage during the day?

Initially, your tattoo artist may cover your tattoo with a bandage to protect it. After removing the bandage, it’s usually best to let your tattoo breathe and avoid re-bandaging it. Keeping the tattoo uncovered allows air to circulate, promoting faster healing.

How can I protect my tattoo when I’m outdoors?

Direct sunlight can fade and damage a healing tattoo, so it’s essential to keep it completely covered for at least two weeks. After that, you should apply sunscreen with a high SPF to protect the ink from UV rays.

What should I do if my tattoo gets wet in the shower?

No need to panic if your tattoo gets a bit wet during a shower. Simply pat it dry with a clean towel or let it air dry. Avoid rubbing the tattoo, however, as this can irritate the skin. It’s also best to keep showers brief and avoid blasting the tattoo with water during the initial healing period.

Can I use products like aloe vera or coconut oil on my healing tattoo?

While natural products like aloe vera and coconut oil are often touted for their healing properties, they can sometimes irritate sensitive skin or interfere with the tattoo's healing process. Stick to the moisturizer recommended by your tattoo artist to ensure optimal healing and avoid unexpected reactions.

How long will it take for my tattoo to fully heal, and what can I do to maintain its appearance?

While the surface of your tattoo may appear healed after two to three weeks, deeper layers of skin can take up to six months to fully regenerate. During this time, continue to moisturize the tattoo and protect it from the sun. To maintain its appearance long-term, use sunscreen and keep the skin hydrated.

What if I experience an allergic reaction to the aftercare products?

Allergic reactions to aftercare products can occur, resulting in redness, swelling, or itching. If you suspect an allergic reaction, stop using the product immediately and contact your tattoo artist or a healthcare professional for advice. They can recommend alternative products and provide guidance on managing the reaction.

By following these tips and paying attention to your body, you can ensure your new tattoo heals beautifully and stays vibrant. Aftercare is key, and a little effort now will keep your tattoo looking awesome in the long run. Enjoy your new ink and rock it with confidence!
